ST. JOHN VALLEY, Maine (May 8, 2018) –Every year, committee members from the Aroostook Chapter of Credit Unions—which includes volunteers from Acadia FCU, NorState FCU, and The County FCU—work together to host an annual financial literacy event for Aroostook County high school juniors. The ‘Financial Fitness Fair’ culminates after nearly a year of planning and benefits over 400 students each year.
‘Financial Fitness – A Money Management Experience’, is an award-winning, half-day event that targets high school juniors and is similar to the game of “LIFE,” where participating students are given a career and monthly income and then have to visit booths associated with various expenses that the average adult is faced with each month. Costs, such as transportation, housing, clothing, food, student loans, insurance and several other everyday expenses, are filled in on a monthly budget form by each student. Credit union volunteers work with students as they make their way through this budgeting scenario and at the end of the event, the goal is for students to have a monthly budget that does not exceed monthly income.
One student who attends the 2018 Financial Fitness Fair will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. In order to be eligible for consideration, the applicant must:
- Attend the Financial Fitness Fair organized by the Aroostook Chapter of Credit Unions
- plan to enroll in a two-year or four-year college or university; and
- must be a member, or have a parent that is a member, of a credit union in Aroostook County.
The scholarship application can be found on Acadia FCU’s website, as well as on NorState FCU and The County FCU’s websites.
All Aroostook County high school juniors are welcome to attend the 2018 Financial Fitness Fair. The fair is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 22 at Loring Job Corps in Limestone, Maine.
